Could JJ even make a Wrath of Khan (remake) if the original Khan episode (Space Seed, 1967) has not been remade first? Kinda hard for the new viewer to understand the story if they have never seen Space Seed to understand why Khan hates Kirk so much.
Besides I think Ricardo Montalbán so nailed the character that any attempt to redo said character will only see failure.
